About Us
Our Club regularly sails and races at Tamar Lakes, which is approximately 3 miles from Bradworthy or Likhampton, although currently we are also searching for a water closer to the Bideford area, as that is where the majority of our members hail from.
Our club consists at the moment of about twelve members and we sail Radio Control, One Metre Yachts or IOMs as they are commonly known, the name One Metre stemming from the overall length of the yacht hull which measures 1 metre exactly.
The yachts themselves are restricted to three suits of sails:-
- Top Suit - for light winds
- Working Suit - for medium to heavy winds
- Storm Suit - The term is self explanatory!
The height of the boat, complete with top suit is 6ft 2 inches.
We sail to the Model Yachting Association Rules which are, more or less, the same rules as apply to full size racing yachts, adapted minimally for this scale. The races are run on a course prepared on the day.
Sailing is mainly on alternate Sundays in the morning for 2 hrs approximately at Tamar and we also travel to other venues for ranking races throughout Cornwall, Avon and Dorset which then sail from 10a.m. to 4 p.m.. These away events are at members discretion. Other clubs also visit us, so that we meet many other sailing enthusiasts and usually a good time is had by all.
